The company was founded in 1937 by Norman Mesirow. Wealth management was Mesirow's founding capability, but the firm now offer services spanning global investment management, capital markets, investment banking and advisory services.
In July 2016, the firm sold its insurance business to Alliant.
Natalie Brown was named CEO in June 2022, becoming the first female CEO in the firm's history.
